Katy Perry Copyright Controversy Spurs Intense Compensation Clash Over Alleged Music Plagiarism

The verdict was given at the trial of the Federal Court of Los Angeles, California – USA on July 29 (local time).

Flame filed a lawsuit against Katy Perry and related parties in 2014. In the lawsuit, Flame said half of the music in “Dark horse” is similar to his “Joyful Noise”.

“Dark horse” is a hit song on Katy Perry’s album “Prism” released in 2013. The song created a buzz, led the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 4 weeks and was also nominated for a Grammy. Immediately after Flame filed the lawsuit, Katy Perry’s side denied the accusations of plagiarism.

At the latest trial, Katy Perry and her partner Dr. Luke both confirmed that they had never heard “Joyful Noise”. The music of “Dark horse” was composed by Dr.Luke and Cirkut. Flame’s side hypothesized that the defendants may have heard the song at the Grammy Awards or on YouTube, Myspace…

Katy Perry tried to provide a lot of evidence to prove that she did not violate copyright. They also called experts as witnesses.

The trial had “difficult” moments when Katy Perry offered to sing the song being sued live in court despite difficulties due to the sound system not being up to standard. On Dr. Luke arrives for the hearing, a shooting takes place right outside the courthouse.

Finally, the judge ruled that Katy Perry violated copyright and moved the case to the stage of calculating penalties and compensation costs for the defendant. Katy Perry faces millions of dollars in compensation for Flame.

Flame is a famous American rapper. The song “Joyful noise” is included in the album “Our world: redeemed”, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2009.
